How experienced operators recognise structural shifts before consensus forms. Pattern matching across cycles, decision-making under deep uncertainty, the uses and limits of priors.

The read

Most of what passes for foresight in venture is pattern matching with the confidence dialled up. The useful version is narrower: knowing which priors still hold when the substrate underneath them changes, and which quietly stopped being true two cycles ago.

The transitions are obvious in hindsight and contested while they run. In 1999 the argument was whether the internet was a distribution channel or a new substrate. In 2010 it was whether software delivered as a service could carry serious enterprise workloads. In 2023 it was whether models were a feature layer or infrastructure. Each time consensus arrived late, and priced the shift after the leverage had already been taken.

What this territory follows is the mechanics of arriving early without arriving wrong — the distance between a read that is contrarian and one that is merely unpopular, the tells that separate a genuine inflection from a funding cycle wearing its clothes, and the specific ways operating experience degrades into anchoring once the regime changes.

What this territory tracks

  • Which priors survive a change of substrate, and which expire without announcing it
  • How consensus forms in venture, and what it costs to be early to it
  • Where operating experience sharpens a read and where it anchors one
  • The difference between an inflection point and a funding cycle
